Mommie's 81st Birthday!

After everything that Mommie has been through, there arent any words to describe how incredibly blessed we all felt to celebrate her 81st birthday with her! She was actually feeling pretty good that day (November 4) and we loved celebrating her!

All of us kids went in together and got her something she's wanted for a while... a flatscreen TV!

She was a little confused by the box and trying to figure out what it was that we were giving her!
Thanks to, oh, about 5 of us... we got it hooked up.
That evening, I invited Mommie, Jonathan and Mama for dinner. Mommie recently got a new set of bottom teeth and at the time, she was having a hard time chewing with them so I tried to think of something that she'd be able to eat and enjoy. So, I made homemade lasagna... which I've never made before ;-) Nervous!!!
But it actually turned out pretty well and was devoured. Mommie was able to eat it!! And liked it!! (HUGE!)
Jonathan and Mack
After dinner, we had a little surprise in store for Mommie. We had invited the rest of the family and her BFF's, Nat and Dorothy over for cake and icecream! Not everyone could come (but they had all seen her earlier in the day when we gave her the TV) but we had a great time!

Rhyan was ready for the cake! It was an icecream cake :-)

Tasting the icing... just to be sure it was ok for us to eat, right? Very sacrificial of her! haha

Mommie with her friend, Dorothy, who brought her a sweet gift (a sweatsuit and shirt!)

Tyler and Lindsay.... looooove how her smile is blue from the icing! All of us were sporting it!

Jonathan and Nat enjoying some cake and coffee!

At this point in life, Rhyan was VERY anti-pictures. Which really stunk b/c we had two sets of professional pics done in November and she looked like this (or crying) for all of them. Nice.

And who knows how or why, but Mack seems to always end up pretty much naked ;-)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow...

I am so grateful for a grandmother who sacrificially raised me. Who has loved me. I'm grateful for the strength she embodies and admire so much her ability to continue to fight to heal. Its one of the biggest blessings to see my babies have a relationship with her. Peggy Frank McKinnon is one of my favorite people, and getting to celebrate her birth was one of my favorite days last year... after all, there was CAKE! ;-)

The Day the Music Died

Ok, so that might be a bit of a dramatic Title ;-) But I can assure you that Jeff feels like its accurate...

So, apparently my husband has found his identity in his hair. I never knew this... that he thought that it was his hair that made him so handsome. But alas, its true.

So you can only imagine his horror to realize that he's.... shhh....whisper it... thinning on top.

He decided that it was time. That he's been trying long enough to hold on, so to speak. So... he shaved it!

The "Before" pics

And, the "After" (with our neice, Avery)

Hmmmm....

I encouraged him to "hold on" a little longer adn let it grow back out. I mean, I still think he's handsome when it was shaved but why give up so easily, right?! HA!

We looked into hair replacement (not b/c i care about it but b/c i swear, he talks about it a ton... super self conscious about it... soooooo, he might hate me for blogging about it... LOL!) but its SO expensive! Like 10K at a minimum! Wow...

So, if anyone has any miracle treatments that wont make him sterile or have any other funky side effects, please share! ;-)

Update and appreciation

I cant say enough how encouraging it has been to just get an outpouring of fb messages, emails and phone calls from friends and "blog friends" who I may or may not have ever met!

Thank you! From the bottom of my heart! I appreciate so much your shared stories of your experiences with changing church's.

AND, thank you to those of you who have INVITED us to visit your church! WOW! How incredible to have someone reach out and invite us and to feel welcomed before we step foot in the door!:-)

I want to take time to respond to each person, but until I have that time, I wanted to do a collective thanks!

THANK YOU! For your prayers, your encouragement, your extended invitation and your time in even reading our blog and taking a moment to do all of the above. Thank you!

Real Time: Where I Am

What I need to be doing tonight is charging my DSLR camera so that I can download the Thanksgiving and Christmas pictures and catch up on my blog. Yeah... its almost March and I still havent posted about Thanksgiving. I've quit setting goals. I'll get to it when I get to it, is my new attitude ;-)

But what I want to write about is all of my current issues. Because by the time I get around to posting about Feb... I will have forgotten that I ever felt the way I do right now!

Oak Hill has been our church home for almost 12 years now.

When Jeff and I were teenagers and dating, we attended Pleasant Grove Baptist. We both gave our lives to Christ at PGBC and began our walk with the Lord there. We got married there. And one year later, some terrible things happened that caused us to move on from PGBC.

Several friends of ours from PG had started going to Oak Hill so we decided to visit. And as it turns out, we never visited anywhere else. We felt so welcomed and were just loved on by so many people... we wanted to stay! So, stay we did.

We took a break from serving for the first year or so of attending OHBC as we "healed" from the hurts of our previous church (wahhhh... i know... everyone has a church sob story. Isnt it unfortunate that we have to go to church with SINNERS?! haha). But eventually, we got involved. And it was great! We served together in the youth ministry, just as we had at PGBC. I led worship. Jeff ran the skit ministry. We loved serving with some lifelong friends and loved the families we were serving.

But somehow, along the way, Oak Hill started to lose members. One by one, families who we love have moved on. Slowly we have watched friends move onto other church's. And while it was sad, we remained at Oak Hill because we believe that the community in which it is placed has a huge need to have the gospel shared!

Over the years, however, we have somehow become the only "young" family in our church. And we are not drawing other "young families" for whatever reason. And despite hoping and praying and serving... well, we have felt that, as a family, we are missing a big piece of life...

Mutual and age appropriate friendships.

Young families who are raising kids.

As much as we, as "mature" christians, don't like to admit that we have needs... we do.
And how does that happen, anyway? That we accept Christ as our savior, grow for a few years and somehow are expected to never "need" anything again but rather to give, give, give and self feed independently? Thats just not reality! Every leader, every pastor, every christian... NEEDS accountability. Mutuality. People to share life with who are in the same phase of life.

Now, dont get me wrong. We are all also called to be a mentor to others and to have mentors. We all also need those who have already walked in our footsteps who can pour out wisdom to us. And we all need to pour out the wisdom thats been imparted to us to others.

But we also need mutuality.

And thats something we've been missing.

So, yesterday was our last day at Oak Hill. It was emotional for us both, although I doubt that anyone could tell on the outside.

Jeff went early that morning to clean the floors of the hallway and kids rooms. For the last time.

And I went early to practice on praise team. For the last time.

The hardest part for us is that we're NOT upset about anything at our church. Nothing is "wrong". No one has made us mad ;-)

We've done our best to serve the people and the community of Oak Hill to the best of our ability to the very end. And now, we are in a season that we look forward to being poured into. A time of refreshing of our souls. A time of rejuvenation.

But its also scary. Because we have no idea as to where we will go. Will people be kind to our children like the people of Oak Hill have? Will anyone speak to us? How alone will we feel as we've left our church home and the people we've left feel hurt by us and need space. So many questions...

And on the other hand, there is this excitement of what is to come. What will it be like to go to church where Jeff will have friends who are also dads who are working and trying to raise a family and be a good husband and stay strong spiritually? How great will it be to share frienships with other couples with young kids... maybe our kids will be friends!?

I dont know what God has for us. I'm scared. And sad. And a little excited. And hopeful for some spiritual growth to come into our family again. And that last thought makes it worth all of the fear and sadness...because my deepest hope is that we will grow in our relationship with Christ, therefore in our relationship with one another. And that as a result, our children will see parents who live out the gospel for them daily and that ultimately, they, too, would choose to follow Christ. After all, THEY are our greatest ministry!

Baby Murphy Fund

Hi All

So, my friend Ashlyn has been updating her blog. She and her husband are in Ohio right now, meeting with specialists about a new problem with the baby's lungs. A very, very RARE problem.

Go on over and read the updates at www.themurphyfamilygrows.blogspot.com

I've set up a donation account for them on Pay Pal and it is linked directly to THEIR bank account. Pay pal will not take any portion of the donation as they allowed it to be set up as a non-profit based on all that Josh and Ashlyn are going through.

Even $10 would make a difference. They are having to take SO much time off of work and the dr's bills are piling up already. Yet, they love their son, value his life and are doing everything possible to get him the medical care he needs for a successful long life (in utero surgery is likely up next)...

Thank you!

Randomness

After all the sickness our kiddos went through in October and November, I finally broke down one night and literally soaked or scrubbed EVERY single toy in our house with bleach water. It took a couple of hours but Jeff jumped in and helped... we were both pretty desperate to rid our home of germs!
Watch our little people! You're going for a swim!

And after all the fevers and ear infections, Mack finally started to get well and we finally got a smile! (well, kind of a weird one...)
And this is what our little Tasmanian devil was up to this day...
LOL is about all I can say... Those babies...
Ok, now this is classic Mack...

And here is my sweet girl playing dress up in a strange combo :-)
As always... trying to get caught up. As in, getting into 2013 would be a great goal! HA!

How Stella Got her Groove Back (link and giveaway)

And by "Stella", I mean Mommy's all over the place...

I spoke a while ago about how I tried Advocare's 24 day challenge last summer and finally got back to my pre-baby weight. YAY! Well, because I love so many of their products, I decided to do the "membership" where I paid $79 and got 20% off all the products.

But then I started having friends ask me how i've gotten so "tiny" (their words, NOT mine) again. Flattering as this may be, whats more exciting is that I KNOW that because of advocare, I'm not only down a couple of pants sizes, I'm healthy! That is a GREAT feeling!

I wanted to share this with a blog friend/mentor of mine, Valerie Plowman over at Chronicles of a Babywise Mom and asked if she would be interested in doing a product review of a couple of my favorite products, and she agreed!

So today, she wrote up a product review about the meal replacement shakes and SPARK, their energy drink. And I thought it would be a perfect time to share a tiny bit about my favorite products, as well!!!

SPARK is hands down my favorite advocare product. With 21 vitamins and minerals and 120g of caffeine, it is the perfect way to start a morning or get through that afternoon "lull" after lunch. Its SO much healthier than any sports drink or soft drink. Fruit punch is my favorite but it comes in lots of great flavors!

For my sweet tooth, i love the Advocare Snack Bars. I have a serious love for chocolate and this helps meet that need but gives me lots of good protein, which most women are pretty deficient in.

Rehydrate  is my favorite drink for re-hydrating after a good workout. My husband drinks it after his long runs (he's training for a marathon) and if my kids have been sick and are not drinking well, I prefer this to keep their electrolytes balanced. This is perfect for teens who are into sports who tend to drink Gatorade or some other drink... Rehydrate has vitamins and minerals that they do not! Again, there are several flavors.

O2 Gold Advanced is Jeff's FAVORITE product. As I said, he is training for a marathon that he is running Presidents Day Weekend. He has ran several 1/2ers but this is his first whole. The O2 Gold helps facilitate oxygen uptake in the body thereby increasing oxygenation to the cells. AKA: its easier to breathe during exercise ;-) He notices a marked difference when he takes it.

Meal Replacement Shakes are a perfect, easy way to start the morning! So many of us moms skip breakfast, but its vital to get our metabolism started! But lots of mom's skip it because they dont have a lot of time.  These shakes are a perfect 1:1 carb/protein combo so you have sustainable energy. There are several yummy flavors, but since i'm a chocolate girl I love chocolate or mocha (yumm... coffee!). Eating whole foods is very important and I would never recommend that anyone replace more than one meal a day (like some diet programs do) but this can simplify life for one meal, anyways.

And i love the 24 Day Challenge Bundle! It is what helped me to make better food choices and as a result, lose 2 pants sizes! It is not a diet that you do for 24 days. It is a gentle cleanse followed by world class nutrition in the form of vitamins and minerals that helps jumpstart a lifestyle!!! Combined with healthy food choices, I have felt better than ever!

There are lots of other products that i love and use daily. Catalyst, probiotics, omegaplex and coreplex to name a few :-) So you can see why its been so beneficial for me to do the membership!!!
HERE is a link to check out any of the 5 lines that advocare has!

And HERE is a link if you are interested in the membership (there are NO minimum orders or auto shipments... its as simple as paying the $79 and getting 20% off for LIFE. period.)

I am so appreciative of Valerie for being willing to do a product review!
Any of the links above take you directly to my microsite and if anyone wants more information or if you have questions, please feel free to email me at forddygirl@yahoo.com

Lastly, I am doing a giveaway on Val's blog. A FREE BOX OF SPARK (your choice of flavor) will be given away today! So head on over to her blog and enter to win!
