3 Snow days now. The first one was pretty great. I was excited to have Jeff home with Rhyan and I for an extra day! We ventured out a couple of times and tried to "play", although that's a little difficult to do with a toddler who looks at the snow and says "burrr" and doesnt want to touch it. We relaxed. I cooked. We watched tv and relaxed some more.
Day 2 we cleaned some. I mopped floors, vacuumed and cooked some more. Jeff cleaned out all of his drawers and found some things for the kidney foundation. We flipped the mattress and washed sheets.
Day 3 we cleaned some more. I removed all of the caulk from the fiberglass shower and re-caulked it so it might actually look clean again (man, that stuff gets DISGUSTING! even if you do scrub it with bleach...). I dusted pretty much
everything in the house. I vacuumed some more floors.
But there are two things that i'm always complaining that i dont have time for but really want to do. The first is to spend time with the Lord. To just be quiet and spend
daily quality time with Him. The second is to exercise. Even if only for 20 minutes on the elleptical. But have I done either? No. And this really breaks my heart. It makes me question my priorities and realize that the fact is, these two things are easy to complain about not having time to do, but in reality, we all have time to do exactly what we
want to do.
Now, dont get me wrong. Some days are crazy. Some days you get up early with great intentions and mid devotion your kid wakes up and is ready to start the day 30 minutes early. Or an emergency distracts you. Whatever. But this week, i've had none of that. I've had nothing but time, and i've used it to clean my home.
Now if the old saying "cleanliness is next to godliness", i'd for sure be on my way to being my own little goddess. But it's just a saying, and there's nothing biblical about it. In fact, God desires just the opposite from me. Remember the story of Mary and Martha? Yeah, something tells me I would have been chastised for cleaning the house when Jesus was there to visit just as badly then as I feel i am now.
I dont know if its guilt that is keeping me away from pursuing a deeper relationship with Him or what. I do feel badly. Shameful, even. And perhaps this is part of why i find all sorts of unimportant things to keep me busy rather than dealing with my own issues and repenting. Or maybe it's because life is going smoothly right now and I feel i have no "need" to pursue Jesus. I dont know which to be more ashamed of. I know that i ALWAYS have need of Jesus. That my very breath and life comes from Him. But its so easy to be distracted by life and to only pursue Him when things are in a downward spiral. And for now, my life is just the opposite. Yes, i know this is because of His blessings. But geez, its easy to over look that. Or, maybe i just dont know where to start. Its so hard to know where to pick up. Um, i'm thinking "i'm so sorry" would be a good place to begin a conversation with Him.
And exercising... I'll just say right now that there is not a bone in my body that wants to actually do that. What i really want is to have a desire to work out. And i dont. And there is nothing magical that is going to make me want to. There is no easy place to start.
Ok, so i have a point. The point is, both of these things are important. Having a strong relationship with the Lord and being physically fit ARE desirable things for me. But i lack motivation to get started. And the fact is, it's not going to be easy. I'm not used to denying my flesh and disciplining my body to do what is right over what is easy. But these are the options:
1. Give in to my flesh and continue to be lazy in two of the most important areas in life and regret it, all of my life (and therefore set and example for my kid(s) that being undisciplined is ok) OR
2. Fight my flesh. ASk the Lord to grant me a little willpower and walk in the Spirit. I've lived this way before and it was delightful. What made me fall off the wagon, so to speak? Who can remember?!
All i know is that I dont want to dream of what might have been, physically or spiritually. Both are conquerable things to work on. Both work hand in hand. And I truly believe that while it really sucks to be in my position right now (spiritually infantile and physically weak), there is forgiveness in Christ and strength in His Spirit.
I'm sure i'm not the only one struggling in these cold winter days to take care of body and spirit... will you join me in working to discipline our bodies to do what we WANT them to do instead of our flesh ruling over us?! I hope so. I do love accountability!
